Disconnecting combiners are a weather resistant box that takes the AWG wires from the solar panels or separate arrays and combines all the wires into a main breaker or fuse box with a disconnect blade handle to quickly shut down the system. Each piece of equipment in a PV system, such as inverters, batteries, and charge controllers, must be able to be disconnected from all sources of power (NEC 2011, Article 690.15). Breakers and fuses are sold separately and are not included.
Combiners and Disconnecting are similar to plain combiners except they have a visible blade to disconnect the entire array and can be locked out for servicing the array. Like combiners disconnecting combiners can be placed anywhere but the safest and most cost efficient location is near the array. Typically on a ground mount rack the combiner / disconnect would be placed on the back of the rack shaded by the panels.
MidNite Solar MNPV Combiners with Disconnect Switch Guide |
The MidNite Disco line of solar combiners with disconnects incorporates NEC 2011 requirements. The disconnect handle is bright red for visibility and can be locked in the off position. Several models can be configured for bi-polar or non-isolated inverters where both the positive and negative legs of the array need circuit protection (maximum output current is split also). Models are available for 150 VDC, 300 VDC, or 600 VDC arrays. All of the combiners are made from powder-coated aluminum for long life in harsh conditions. A clear see-through dead front is supplied with all Disco combiners. Models are available with either NEMA 3R or NEMA 4X ratings. Many of these come with a shunt trip disconnect that enables the MNDiscoPSB to trip the disconnect remotely. An MNSPD-600 is included standard with many of these combiners. See the table below for options that are available or included. Breaker versions do not include breakers. HV versions come with fuse holders except for the MNPV4HV Disco 3R Basic. |

Combiners and other Disconnecting solar safety equipment are different from junction boxes or the commonly used term “J-box). Combiners and disconnects not only allow for the combination of multiple strings down to one or two outputs, but also provide a fast means of shutting down the array at the panels. Sections 690-4(c), 690-14(b), and 690-18 of the National Electric Code talks to this application and make the combining disconnect an essential component of a code-compliant system.
Combiners and Disconnecting Weatherproof Box
Combiners located outside at a minimum must be NEMA 3R rated and UL listed. The MidNite Disco line of solar combiners with disconnects incorporates NEC code standards. Additionally, conduit and strain reliefs use at the knockouts will keep the inside of the box dry and protect the jacket of the PV wire.
Solar panel kits are packages that include all the necessary components and accessories to install and operate a solar power system. There are different types of solar panel kits, depending on how they interact with the grid. On-off grid kits allow you to switch between using grid electricity and solar electricity, depending on the availability and cost of each source. Hybrid systems combine solar panels with other renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines or batteries, to provide more reliable and efficient power generation.
Solar energy is a renewable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels that can provide many benefits for homeowners and the environment. Solar energy is captured by solar panels and converted into electricity that can power homes or businesses. Some of the features and benefits of solar energy are: - Lower electric bills: Solar panels can reduce or eliminate your dependence on grid electricity and save you money on your energy costs. - Lower carbon footprint: Solar panels do not emit greenhouse gases or deplete natural resources, unlike fossil fuels. By going solar, you can reduce your impact on climate change and air pollution. - Higher home value: Solar panels can increase the value of your home by making it more attractive to potential buyers who want to save on energy bills and support clean energy. - Water conservation: Solar panels do not require water to generate electricity, unlike some conventional power plants that use water for cooling or steam. By going solar, you can conserve water and protect water resources. - Net metering: Solar panels can generate more electricity than you need during the day, and you can sell the excess power back to the grid for credits or cash. This way, you can offset your electricity usage at night or during cloudy days and lower your electric bills even more.
